13/11/2026: Updating the Great Acceleration Charts: New signals for a changing world. Part of the Being Human Festival.

Venue: IALS, 17 Russel Square, Rooms L103/L104, London WC1B 5DR.

The Great Acceleration charts made planetary change perceptible. In doing so, they changed how we sense and feel the planet. This workshop treats those affects as data. Can that change itself become a signal? How can we update the Great Acceleration charts as a practice in collective futurecrafting in the face of climate collapse?

After a brief introduction to the charts, participants will work in small groups to trace how the curves ripple through their own lives and organisations, and to translate these ripples into candidate signals for an expanded chart set. These candidate signals are new indicators of exponential increase beginning the mid-twentieth century, in addition to those already established, ranging from GDP to deforestation, to capture the affect that scientific accounts of human change to the planet make to the way we think about the planet and our place therein.

The workshop is convened by Dr. Alexander Damianos, who is joined by Territorial Agency (John Palmesino & Ann-Sofi Rönnskog) and Dr. Jochen Büttner (Max Planck Institute of Geoanthropology).
